Landing Zone procedure and Safety
Steps for
setting up a Landing Zone for LIFESTAR
-
Choose
a location that is best clear of obstacles like power lines, guy wires,
towers, trees or debris that could potentially become flying objects
(make
sure the LZ is not in an area that there is loose dirt like freshly tiled
fields or debris that could injury or blind the pilot while landing)
-
Emergent vehicles may be used to mark obstacles
-
One
ground contact that the pilot will communicate with
-
The LZ
can be set up with LIFESTAR LZ kit,
headlights or flares that will not potentially blow away when the
aircraft is landing
-
Advise
LIFESTAR Dispatch the frequency (Med Channel, UHF Freq or VHF Freq) that
will be utilized to communicate with the aircraft
LIFESTAR generally requests Landing Zones 100x100 for daytime & night time
Landing Area
(T.O.W.W.)
Please
advise the pilot of the following conditions:

Terrain
-
Level of
slopes
-
Rocks or
bushes
-
Paved or
dusty road
-
Obstacles
-
Street
signs
-
Cars
-
Trees
-
Antennas
-
Wires
-
Telephone
wires
-
High
tension wires
-
Guide wires
Safety
Rules
-
Never
approach the aircraft until signaled to do so by the pilot or flight crew
-
Upon
receiving permission, always approach toward the front (nose) of the
aircraft
-
Never
approach or walk behind the rear of the aircraft
-
No
smoking within 50 feet of aircraft
-
No
running
-
Do not
assist crew in opening aircraft doors
Flight
crews are responsible for loading and unloading equipment and will direct the
loading and unloading of patients
Landing
site should be set up and controlled by a designated individual with assistance
of local law enforcement personnel
In the
event the pilot feels the LZ is unsafe he will abort the landing and communicate
with the ground contact to assure another LZ
